Sony Corp and other Japanese electronics makers will likely post robust earnings recoveries for the last quarter on strong year-end sales, and lighter post-holiday inventory bodes well for their outlook. Following the global downturn in 2008, Panasonic Corp, Canon as well as Sony have slashed costs and pursued mergers and acquisitions to boost competitiveness, and are now ready to reap the benefits of their turnaround measures as the economy recovers and consumers cautiously loosen their purse strings.

US Christmas demand was better than expected. In January-March a year earlier, they were forced to almost halt output to clear inventory. This year, they don't need to worry about that   -Ryosuke Katsura

Singer Crystal Kay (23) has been given her first regular role in a television drama series. She will appear in NTV's "Hidarime Tantei EYE," which is scheduled to premiere on January 23. "Hidarime Tantei EYE" started out as a one-episode special in October, but the network decided to develop it into a complete series for this winter.

Liu Qing of China won the gold of women's 800m at the East Asian Games in Hong Kong on Thursday. Liu clocked 2:06.41 for the title, followed by Akari Kishikawa of Japan in the second place at 2:07.21. The bronze medal was taken by Manami Mashita of Japan at 2:07.42. Earlier in the men's 800m final, Ryosuke Awazu of Japan won the gold at 1:50.66.

After three days of damp surfaces, disrupted and rescheduled plays, the first gold in the mixed doubles should have dawned on the Victoria Park Tennis Centre court yesterday (December 9) -- the eighth day of the Fifth East Asian Games currently being held in Hong Kong. But the backlog and the headaches continue to mount for umpires and officials dealing with the Games only programme hiccup. Japanese top backstroker RyosukeIrie won again in the East Asian Games (EAG) swimming pool with a time of 52.76 seconds in the men's 100m backstroke final on Wednesday. The silver medal was taken by South Korean Park Seonkwan at 54.66 followed by He Jianbin of China in the third place at 55.61.
